Monday was a driving and sightseeing day on our way to our next cute cottage, a vacation rental, The Watermill at East Trehnan Farm near the village of Looe. Our gorgeous weather continued, leaving at 10am for Looe, a highly recommended but "too busy for us" village. Our first stop was another National Trust estate, Trelissick Gardens and House, not far from Truro, Cornwall.
Trelissick is on its own peninsula, with panoramic views over the Fal estuary. Being mid May the gardens were in full bloom so walking the gardens and pathways was delightful. We took a a trail across the open parkland to get the views of the town of Falmouth.
As we'd been eating our picnic and finished off a bag of Burt's Chips, Paul turned the bag over and noticed phone number inviting us to call, too good for PK to pass up..."want to talk to us"? so...why not! A nice chat and we were on our way once again. Thank you, Burt's Chips, for the fun of that moment.
We returned to the main entrance and the car park to continue our drive with a short hop across the Fal river on the King George Floating Bridge.
Though it's called a floating bridge, it's actually a ferry established in 1888 connecting the Roseland Peninsula to Truro and Falmouth, avoiding the 27 mile alternative drive. It carries over 300,000 cars every year and is one of only five chain ferries in England. What fun to add it to our adventures!
Once across we took a turn and found ourselves in the tiny village of St Just-in-Roseland. The most lovely part was the 13th-century church and cemetery set along the riverside with gardens and granite blocks carved with Bible quotations and several Celtic crosses. Amazing.
Right across the street was Misss V's Tea House, a sweet tea room with gardens and nice stop to absorb the beauty of this little part of England.
Once back on the road and finding our directions, Paul realized we needed gas...not a good thing to be trying to find on the tiny back roads of England; there just aren't any. But we kept driving while beginning to feel much more worried, we finally stopped to ask a lady out gardening in her yard and she gave us the directions to a very small one-gas-pump-station close enough for us. Whew! Problem solved, so off to our darling 2 bedroom cottage, The Watermill at East Trehnan Farm. Though only 32 mies away, the route we followed took 1.5 hours to get there! But, that's what we love so much about England; time to slow life down to a crawl and savor it all.
And, so worth the drive!!! Beautifully restored stone building, two floors, comfy furniture, plus...a hot tub! What a fantastic find and the last of our Cornwall stays.
Our Welcome Basket on the kitchen counter...
We sure could have stayed many more days, but two nights was all we had before arriving at our next housesitting home.
