Since we had a really big day of driving ahead of us, we were up early and on the road by 7:30 on Monday morning. We filled our propane tanks in Jackson then started our scenic Route 181 southeast. Fall colors and a beautiful river running along side of us, the morning was spectacular. Then as we came out of the beautiful forested mountains we dropped into the flat valley with rolling hills and sparse vegetation and a 400 mile drive. Our preference is always to take small 2 lane highways and that's what we did as we drove south until we hit the big interstate at I 80 east at Rock Springs.
Wednesday and Thursday Paul and KJ did some fine tuning on the VW before we set out for Camp Dick, in the Roosevelt National Forest, only 45 minutes north of Boulder.
The drive up Highway 7 out of Lyons was gorgeous; narrow with rocky cliffs but an easy drive for the motorhome.
Much better than the twisty road Kj wanted us to take.
When we arrived in the park Kurt was a little surprised that so many campsites were already occupied , especially since it was only 9AM on a Friday morning. He and I drove around and luckily found 2 great sites side by side...our home for the next 3 nights. Love National Forest camping when we can use our Senior Pass for half price camping.
Our little drive from Boulder took us up almost 3000 feet in elevation, camping at 8,750.
We got the motorhome settled in and I relaxed in the beautiful sunshine, while Paul and Kurt event back to some VW projects...finally getting the folding table attached and working.
Once that and other little "fix its' were done, they tackled the big one...a heater for the camper.
The trees in the park were turning lovely shades of fall color. Everywhere I looked the yellow, orange and red aspen leaves were sparkling in the sun.
Saturday morning we took a break from repair work to take a hike up along the Middle St. Vrain River.
Laura and friend, Holly, joined us on Saturday afternoon. They needed to return to Boulder on Sunday afternoon and our weather began to change from sunny to chilly and cloudy. Kurt moved his van into our campsite for our last night there.
Monday morning was definitely colder. As we were sitting inside having coffee Foster started barking. As usual, we were telling him to stop barking, which he didn't, so we looked out and there right near our campsite was a beautiful bull moose. He and Foster just staring at each other. I wasn't fast enough to catch the photo, just enjoyed the moment. Then we bundled up and went for a walk for about an hour along the upper side of the campground.
The trees seemed to be getting stronger colors as the days went by.
Just before heading back to Boulder we jumped in Kurt's van and went for a drive to check out a nearby campground and lakes. Then onto finding this beautiful wide patch of color. Lots of cars were pulled off along the roadside, everyone getting their fill of this awesome sight.
We stayed one more night at Boulder Elk's and had dinner and a wonderful visit with Kurt and Laura. Always hard to say good bye but such a wonderful week!
